Key Takeaways

  • Data storytelling combines evidence, narrative, and visuals to explain a finding and why it matters.
  • Your strongest media angle answers a question people care about with evidence a journalist can examine.
  • Data visualization helps communicate a finding. Data journalism uses analysis to develop and substantiate reporting.
  • Fractl’s approach connects topic research, original studies, visual storytelling, and targeted media outreach.
  • Measure coverage, brand attribution, and relevant visits separately from business outcomes.

As a marketing leader, your job goes beyond reporting numbers internally. You need to turn research into a story that people outside your company have a reason to read. A finding that deserves public attention needs a clear question, evidence a journalist can check, and a reason to cover it now.

I’ll show you how to find that story, test it, build it, and measure what it earns.

These three terms overlap, but they do different jobs.

Data visualization presents patterns through charts, graphs, and maps. Data storytelling adds context and a narrative that explains a supported finding. Data journalism uses data analysis as part of reporting and investigation. You can see how that plays out in some of Fractl’s data journalism examples.

All three can contribute to one campaign. A chart shows the pattern, the narrative explains it, and the reporting tests it.

Evaluate a story before you commit to production. Four questions help:

  • Is the question specific and unanswered? Check whether existing coverage already answers it.
  • Is the finding defensible? A journalist should be able to examine the evidence.
  • Is it relevant to the public? The story should matter to people beyond your customers.
  • Is there a reason to cover it now? Tie it to a decision, season, or conversation your audience is having.

An adjacent topic can reach people outside your customer base while keeping a credible link to your business. A software brand, for example, can study creators instead of its own product.

When you weigh a story, look at four things:

Promotional bias

Pursue the story when the question is new, the evidence holds up under review, readers outside your customer base would care, and the finding stands without a product pitch. Rework it when coverage already answers the question, the conclusion was set before the analysis, the relevance depends on your brand, or the evidence can’t be traced or explained.

At Fractl, we help your brand find something worth adding to the conversation. We develop original research, identify the newsworthy findings, and turn them into stories and visuals we pitch to relevant journalists. Here’s how we bring those pieces together.

  1. Find a question your audience needs answered. Research the topic, existing coverage, and the people affected. Identify what your evidence could add before you choose a headline. A research question is not a predetermined conclusion.
  2. Choose and check your data. Compare original surveys, public datasets, and permissioned first-party data. Define the population, collection period, relevant variables, privacy requirements, and limitations. Assign the analysis to someone with the right data skills. Not every project needs a data scientist.
  3. Analyze the findings before writing the story. Clean the data, inspect missing values and denominators, and test alternative explanations. Check whether an apparent difference holds up. Keep raw data and calculations traceable. Use correlation language only where the analysis supports it.
  4. Build the narrative around one finding. Connect the finding to a person, decision, or consequence your audience recognizes. Give enough context to interpret it, then develop the supporting evidence in a logical order. A stable pattern makes a good story without invented conflict.
  5. Choose visuals that explain the evidence. Match the chart to the comparison. Keep units, dates, labels, and population visible. Use a focused visual and plain explanation instead of moving an entire dashboard into the article.
  6. Package the story for relevant journalists. Prepare a clear landing page, concise findings, methodology, usable assets, and an expert who can answer follow-up questions. Tailor the pitch to the journalist’s beat and readers. Coverage is an editorial decision, so treat it as one.

Each example shows our approach and a technique you can apply.

Tweets by turf

In this classic campaign, we organized social posts by geography and everyday terms.

Technique: Group social posts by place and shared vocabulary.Captured posts don’t represent a whole state’s population.

Pick a format based on the finding and how you plan to use it. A chart is not a complete data story on its own.

Spreadsheets and visualization tools

Use a spreadsheet to organize and review data first, then use tools like Tableau or Power BI for building visuals.

Choose the format that fits the communication task.

Before you pitch, run this checklist to decide whether the story is ready to share.

  • ✔ Trace every claim to the data and analysis.
  • ✔ Disclose the measured group and the period.
  • ✔ Keep important limitations in the story.
  • ✔ Label visuals clearly.
  • ✔ Remove unsupported claims.
  • ✔ Check small subgroups, misleading scales, cherry-picking, and privacy.

Transparent methods help a journalist assess your work. They don’t guarantee trust or coverage.

Plan your reporting around five measures:

  • Relevant media coverage
  • Brand mentions and citations
  • Referring domains
  • Referral visits
  • Qualified inquiries

Define the reporting period up front. A lift in traffic doesn’t prove the campaign caused it.

Track search and AI visibility as separate observations. A mention, a citation, a ranking, and a sale are different outcomes, and you shouldn’t expect the same result from different campaigns.

Choose one useful question. Then assess the evidence your team already has: what it shows, who it affects, and whether a journalist could verify it. If it holds up, you have the start of a story.

When you want support with research, storytelling, and outreach, partner with Fractl.

Do you need to be a data scientist to tell a data story?

No. You need enough data literacy to interpret and communicate the evidence. Bring in specialist analytical support when your method requires it, such as advanced modeling. Communication skills and modeling skills are different.

Can you use public data instead of running a survey?

Yes. Public data can support an original analysis when its scope, quality, and permissions suit your question. Originality can come from the question or the comparison you make, not only from owning the dataset.

How much data do you need for a credible story?

It depends on your research question, method, population, and intended comparison. No universal sample-size minimum applies.

Can AI write your data story?

AI can help you organize and draft. Your team stays responsible for the analysis, privacy, and factual accuracy. Always verify the underlying evidence in any AI output.
