Digital PR in Education: Case Studies, Results, and What Works

Share

Education is one of the most crowded, most scrutinized markets a brand can compete in. Before a parent enrolls a child, a learner signs up for a course, or a district adopts a new platform, they research first, and that research usually starts with a search engine and the publications they already trust. That makes brand awareness a direct driver of enrollment, lead generation, and conversion rates, not a soft metric.

Digital PR is how education brands earn that trust at scale. Data-driven digital PR turns original data into stories that national and education-specific outlets want to publish, builds online visibility (including critical AI visibility), earns high-authority links, and brand mentions that move SEO rankings, and puts your brand in front of the right target audience.

Below are case studies showing how Fractl has helped four education brands earn measurable results through digital PR, content marketing, and earned media: an online learning and test-prep platform, a game-based K-12 learning platform, a digital-skills platform, and a homeschool education company.

Why Digital PR Works for Education Brands

Share

Education is a market where trust and reliability is central to its success. Here’s why digital PR is built for it:

  • Trust carries more weight in education. Parents, learners, and institutional stakeholders make high-stakes, often expensive decisions. Credibility is the product, and a feature in a respected publication builds authority that paid ads can’t replicate.
  • Search visibility drives enrollment. Prospective students and parents typically begin their research with a search engine (and, increasingly, AI tools). Digital PR earns the high-quality backlinks that lift rankings and send organic traffic to the landing pages where enrollment and lead generation happen.
  • AI visibility is the new frontier. Learners now research options in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews. Earned media feeds whether and how those platforms reference your brand, so consistent coverage today shapes who gets recommended tomorrow.

Case Study: A Leading Online Learning and Test-Prep Platform

The Challenge

This platform competes for high-intent searches against well-funded education and media brands. It wanted to grow organic visibility and brand awareness with learners, educators, and prospective students, and to build the domain authority that lifts rankings across thousands of education keywords.

The Strategy

Fractl ran a link-worthy, data-driven journalism program built on original surveys and studies about the topics this audience cares about most: AI and ChatGPT in the classroom, the real cost of higher education, and the day-to-day realities teachers face. Each study was pitched to top-tier national press, and a syndication model carried the coverage from high-authority publishers out to regional and niche publications, multiplying the reach of a single campaign.

The Results

  • 2,334 total earned links, including 702 from publishers with a DA above 40 and 364 from publishers with a DA above 70
  • 263 high-authority domains (DA 70+) that carried brand mentions
  • Regional coverage across 99 metro areas in 44 states, plus 14 university (.edu) links
  • An estimated 42 million lifetime views against a combined audience of 2.08 billion, with 32,100+ social engagements

As that coverage compounded, the platform’s organic search footprint grew sharply: domain rating reached 85, referring domains climbed by roughly 30,000 to 169,000, and organic traffic rose by about 17.5 million monthly visits to 25.7 million, worth an estimated $1.7 million in added traffic value. Notable placements included CNN, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Forbes, CNBC, Business Insider, CNET, Newsweek, and Education Week.

Case Study: A Game-Based K-12 Learning Platform

The Challenge

A fast-growing platform in K-12 learning needed to build domain authority and earn the high-authority editorial links that support organic growth across a wide set of education search terms. It also had to stand out in a category full of parenting, gaming, and edtech competitors.

The Strategy

Over a roughly 12-month engagement, Fractl ran 30 campaigns built around original research: data studies and surveys on childhood gaming, math anxiety, the four-day school week, financial-literacy mandates, AI in education, and the slang students actually use. The mix paired evergreen data journalism with reactive, real-time newsjacking and expert sourcing to keep the brand in the conversation as education stories broke.

The Results

  • 1,490+ media stories earned and 1,499 total links, 1,371 of them dofollow
  • 117 links from DA 70+ publishers and 715+ from DA 40+ publishers
  • An average of 60 links per completed campaign, with standouts of 904 links from a single data study and 389 from a financial-literacy survey

The authority and traffic followed: domain rating reached 77, referring domains grew from 6,428 to 9,025 (about 40 percent), and average organic traffic nearly doubled, from 4.39 million to 8.21 million monthly visits. Organic keywords rose by 123,000 to 314,000, with 15,900 ranking in the top three positions. Coverage included TODAY, Newsweek, CBS News, Forbes, Business Insider, New York Post, and TechCrunch, plus the education trade press at EdSurge and The Educator.

Case Study: A Digital-Skills Education Platform

The Challenge

This platform’s tools are used by students and teachers every day, but it needed authoritative links and media coverage to build search visibility and credibility against larger education brands.

The Strategy

Fractl built a run of data-driven journalism campaigns on original research about classroom life and digital habits, including The Time Savings of Fast Typists, Couples Communication in the Digital Age, Life-Changing Teachers, Making Digital Mistakes, The Privilege of Unplugging, and The STEM Gap. Each campaign gave journalists data they could not get anywhere else.

The Results

17 original placements that generated 203 total links and brand mentionsCoverage across 70 unique linking domains, including 46 dofollow linksTop performer, The STEM Gap alone earned 101 links and mentions across 33 unique domains from7 placements

Coverage included Entrepreneur, ZDNet, PCMag, American City Business Journals, Elite Daily, ValueWalk, TheLadders, and Romper, with education-specific reach into STEMconnector, ClassTechTips, and EdCircuit.

Case Study: A Homeschool Education Company

The Challenge

This company needed to build authority and brand awareness with the parents researching homeschooling online, a fast-growing, decision-heavy audience that leans on search and trusted media before committing to a curriculum.

The Strategy

Fractl ran a data-driven journalism program built on original surveys and rankings about the homeschooling movement, including Breaking Down the Homeschooling Movement (regional and generational interest), K-12 Parents’ Perceptions on ChatGPT (how parents and teachers view AI in learning), and Best States for Homeschooling (a data-backed meta-ranking). Each study gave national and regional journalists fresh, quotable data.

The Results

  • 75 total links and brand mentions across the completed campaigns
  • 22 of those links from publishers with a domain authority above 70, including 56 dofollow links
  • National pickup from Yahoo, Forbes, New York Post, and Fast Company, with regional and education coverage from Washington Examiner, Deseret News, PennLive, Hartford Courant, Upworthy, GovTech, and The 74 Million

A single survey on Gen Z and homeschooling drove coverage in the New York Post and Upworthy, while the best-states ranking earned a wave of regional news placements across multiple states.

Campaign Formats That Work in Education

A few campaign types earned coverage again and again across this work. They’re the formats we’d reach for first in education:

Original surveys of parents, students, teachers, and administrators

A survey on financial-literacy requirements earned 389 links on its own, alongside studies on homework stress, math anxiety, and the slang students use

State and metro rankings tied to education outcomes or policy

A “best states for homeschooling” meta-ranking and a “most gaming-obsessed states and cities” study both turned data into local news in markets across the country

Reactive PR on live education stories

AI in the classroom, tuition and student debt, school calendars, and testing. Our ChatGPT and four-day-school-week campaigns landed CNN, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and EdSurge

Search-data studies on what learners and parents are researching

Pairing a survey with Google search-trend data showed where homeschooling interest was climbing fastest and turned that demand into widely syndicated coverage

Expert commentary on breaking education news

Placing education experts in stories as they develop keeps a brand in the conversation between bigger campaigns

What Education Brands Can Learn From These Results

A few things stand out across these campaigns:

  • Reactive PR works because education is always in the news. Policy shifts, AI in classrooms, enrollment trends, and student outcomes create a steady stream of newsworthy angles. Brands set up to respond in real time earn coverage that a quarterly press release never will.
  • Original data outperforms announcements. Every result above came from research, surveys, and studies that gave journalists something exclusive. One data study earned 904 links on its own. Boilerplate brand news can’t do that.
  • Education-specific outlets matter as much as mainstream press. Placements in Education Week, EdSurge, and The 74 Million reach the educators, administrators, and stakeholders who influence enrollment and purchasing, coverage that general news can’t substitute for.
  • SEO and digital PR compound. High-authority links lift domain authority, domain authority lifts rankings, and better rankings send organic traffic to the landing pages that convert. Paired with on-page optimization and a clean user experience, that traffic keeps converting. We earned links for the clients above, who then watched their referring domains and organic traffic climb.
  • AI visibility is the next competitive advantage. The education brands earning consistent, high-authority coverage now are the ones AI search tools are already learning to cite, and that lead compounds over time.

Digital PR in Education FAQs

Got questions about digital PR for education brands? Here’s what you need to know.

Does digital PR work for education brands?

Yes, and the case studies above show it. The education industry’s constant news cycle creates natural angles for earned media, and original data turns those angles into coverage that builds brand awareness and drives organic traffic. Across these programs, that meant 4,100+ earned links, 500+ from publishers with a domain authority above 70, and organic traffic that grew sharply for the platforms involved.

How is digital PR different from traditional PR in education?

Traditional education PR centers on press releases and event coverage. Digital PR centers on earning online coverage that improves search engine rankings through high-quality links and brand mentions, builds visibility inside AI platforms, and drives measurable traffic to landing pages. It’s more data-driven and tied directly to digital marketing outcomes like lead generation and conversion rates.

What types of digital PR campaigns work best for edtech companies?

Data journalism, reactive PR, proactive PR, and content marketing resource guides. The strongest campaigns pair newsworthy original data with outreach to both mainstream and education-specific publications. Education brands can extend that authority into thought leadership through webinars, LinkedIn content, and influencer partnerships with educators.
